Aviva Launches a US Specialty Insurer Starting With Commercial Property in Q4 and Sets a Target of More Than £500 Million of Wealth Profit by 2032

Aviva announced on October 7 a New York-based US specialty platform backed by its A+ rated UK insurer, and on October 16 told investors its Wealth arm is on track for £280 million of operating profit by 2027 and expects to exceed £500 million by 2032.

Aviva, a large UK insurer, has made two announcements in two weeks that show where it expects growth. On October 7, 2026 it launched Aviva Specialty, a US specialty insurance platform based in New York. On October 16 it held a Wealth 'In Focus' briefing for investors and analysts, the first of its kind since 2023, at which it set out a profit target for the Wealth business. Both items come from Aviva's own announcements, namely its press release on the US launch and the regulatory announcement of the briefing. We have not reviewed the presentation slides or any recording of the briefing, so we report only the figures that the announcements contain.

Start with the US launch. Aviva Specialty is a wholly owned platform headquartered in New York City. It will start underwriting commercial property risks in the fourth quarter of 2026 and will serve the open-market brokerage channel and work with program administrators, in what Aviva calls a partnership-led model. Commercial property is the first line. The roadmap, according to the release, includes cyber, specialty and financial lines, and specialty casualty, with further expansion into delegated authority and program business. Policies will be written on the paper of Aviva Insurance Limited, which means that the UK insurer's balance sheet stands behind them; the release notes that Aviva Insurance Limited is rated A+ by AM Best as of September 2026, and it uses the name 'Aviva Insurance Ltd.' in one place, a minor inconsistency. The US legal entity is Aviva Specialty Insurance Services US, Inc., which does business as Aviva Specialty Insurance Agency Inc. in California and Florida.

Who is running it? Mike Karmilowicz is President of Aviva Specialty. He said what differentiates the business is 'the combination of a seasoned specialty insurance team' with a purpose-built platform. Jason Storah, chief executive of UK and Ireland General Insurance, called the launch an important step in Aviva's growth strategy and said the US offers significant growth opportunities, adding 'We are entering the market with a long-term perspective.' The release does not say how much capital Aviva is committing, how large it wants the US business to be, or when it expects it to be profitable, and it does not discuss the relationship with Direct Line, which Aviva owns, so we do not speculate on any of these. The release describes this as the first stage of a US specialty strategy and says Aviva will expand deliberately.

Why would a UK insurer go to the US? The release says only that the US offers significant opportunities. In general terms, the United States is the largest specialty insurance market in the world, and entering through brokers and program administrators lets a new insurer access business without building a large distribution network. The countervailing point, which the sources do not discuss, is that specialty markets are in a softer pricing cycle, so a new entrant must earn a place against established competitors. We note that other broker and insurer commentary in recent months has reported falling specialty rates, but we have not examined it for this article.

Now the Wealth briefing. Aviva's announcement says it is on track for £280 million of Wealth operating profit by 2027 and expects to exceed £500 million by 2032. Wealth operating profit has doubled since 2019, driven mainly by the Workplace and Adviser Platform propositions, which are the workplace pension business and the platforms used by financial advisers. Aviva says it is the UK's largest Wealth provider by assets, at £261 billion, with nearly six million Wealth customers, out of a UK customer base of 21.8 million. The briefing was hosted by group chief executive Amanda Blanc and presented by Doug Brown, chief executive of Insurance, Wealth and Retirement, and Michele Golunska, managing director of Wealth. Aviva describes the wealth market as 'a major growth opportunity and central to Aviva's long-term strategy'.

What drives the forecast? Aviva expects the UK wealth market to grow by more than 10% a year and, by 2035, an asset pool of £7.5 trillion and a profit pool of about £10 billion. These are Aviva's own projections and not independent estimates. It sees further organic growth potential in Direct Wealth, Advice and Targeted Support, a new regulatory approach that allows firms to give guidance to groups of customers. New technology, including artificial intelligence, and regulation such as the Pension Schemes Act 2026 and Targeted Support are cited as sources of opportunity. The announcement does not disclose net flow figures, so we cannot say how much new money Wealth is attracting.

The group figures come from both notes to editors. Aviva has 25.3 million customers and more than 325 years in business, paid £31.9 billion in claims and benefits in 2025, and had £479 billion of group assets under management and an estimated Solvency II shareholder capital surplus of £6.8 billion at June 30, 2026. The surplus is the amount of capital above the regulatory requirement.

What should readers make of this? The two announcements are a statement of strategy, not a set of results, and their numbers are targets that may or may not be met. For brokers in the US, there is a new potential source of commercial property capacity from Q4. For UK savers, the wealth push suggests Aviva will compete harder for workplace pensions and adviser platforms. For investors, the key tests are whether the US entry can be profitable in a soft market and whether Wealth reaches its profit targets. This article is a summary of company announcements and is not investment or insurance advice.

Key Points

  • 1Aviva Specialty, a wholly owned US specialty platform based in New York, will start underwriting commercial property in the fourth quarter of 2026, working with open-market brokers and program administrators.
  • 2The roadmap includes cyber, specialty and financial lines, and specialty casualty; policies will be written on Aviva Insurance Limited paper, which AM Best rates A+ as of September 2026.
  • 3The release gives no capital commitment, premium target or financial target for the US business.
  • 4On October 16 Aviva said its Wealth operating profit is on track for £280 million by 2027, has doubled since 2019, and is expected to exceed £500 million by 2032.
  • 5Aviva calls itself the UK's largest wealth provider by assets (£261 billion), with nearly six million Wealth customers; group assets under management were £479 billion and the Solvency II surplus about £6.8 billion at June 30, 2026.

Why This Matters

A large UK insurer opening a US specialty arm and setting a long-term wealth profit target shows where it sees growth: in specialty risks that need underwriting expertise and in retirement and investment products. For brokers and savers it signals more competition in US commercial property and a bigger push into UK wealth.
