CNO Financial's Third-Quarter Operating Income Jumps 41% to $179.1 Million and Guidance Is Raised, but $44.9 Million of Actuarial-Review Gains and a Lower Book Value Complicate the Picture

CNO Financial Group reported third-quarter 2026 net operating income of $179.1 million, up 41%, and raised its 2026 operating EPS guidance, with $44.9 million of that coming from its annual actuarial review; reported book value per share fell to $25.34 while the statutory RBC ratio was an estimated 374%.

CNO Financial Group, an Indiana-based insurer serving middle-income Americans with life, health and annuity products, reported third-quarter 2026 results on October 29 that were far stronger than a year earlier but that also contain items investors need to read carefully. According to the company's release, net operating income was $179.1 million, or $1.90 per diluted share, up 41% in dollars and 47% per share. Net income was $161.1 million, or $1.71 per diluted share, compared with $23.1 million, or $0.24, in the third quarter of 2025. For the first nine months of the year, net income was $324.7 million, or $3.41 per diluted share, against $136.4 million, or $1.36, a year earlier. The company said it was raising its 2026 operating earnings-per-share guidance, with the midpoint up 9% from the previous guidance, and that operating EPS is up 43% year to date.

What lifted the quarter

Three things shaped the result. The first is the annual actuarial review, in which insurers update the assumptions used to value long-term liabilities such as expected lapses, mortality and investment returns. CNO said the significant items from its comprehensive annual review added $44.9 million, or $0.48 per share, to both net income and net operating income. Subtracting that arithmetically from the reported $1.90 per share leaves about $1.42 per share, which is a simple calculation on the reported figures and not a company-stated number. The company's own presentation of operating return on equity makes the same point: operating ROE was 15.4%, or 14.1% excluding significant items, compared with 11.2% a year earlier.

The second factor is investment income. General account net investment income was $441.5 million, up from $382.9 million. Investment income not allocated to product lines rose 72% to $68.1 million. Income from insurance products was $172.0 million, up 15%, and insurance policy income rose to $688.2 million from $658.4 million. The third factor is the comparison: the third quarter of 2025 included a $96.7 million goodwill and asset impairment charge that depressed that period's net income, which helps explain why reported net income jumped so sharply.

Reported revenue fell, however. Total revenues were $1,086.0 million, down from $1,188.7 million, and the release shows total investment losses of $64.7 million, including realized investment losses of $48.3 million within non-operating items. Non-operating items also included a $69.7 million gain from fixed indexed annuity embedded derivatives and market risk benefits, and a $22.1 million deferred tax asset valuation allowance. These are the kind of accounting and market-driven items that explain the gap between net operating income and net income.

Sales and distribution

CNO said total new annualized premiums rose for a 17th consecutive quarter, with continued growth in asset accumulation products such as annuities. Its Consumer and Worksite agent counts grew for a 15th and 17th consecutive quarter respectively. The company describes itself as having $39.3 billion of total assets, 3.3 million policies, 3,200 associates, 5,100 exclusive agents and more than 6,500 independent partner agents. The release available for this article was truncated, so the full sales breakdown by product is not covered here.

Book value and capital

The book value figures show why insurers report several measures. Book value per share, which includes unrealized gains and losses on the bond portfolio through accumulated other comprehensive income, was $25.34 compared with $27.24 a year earlier. Book value per diluted share excluding that item was $41.29, up 8% from $38.10. The gap between the two measures reflects the accumulated other comprehensive income component. The release does not explain the drivers of the difference, and the unrealized losses are a genuine feature of the balance sheet.

On regulatory capital, CNO estimated its consolidated statutory risk-based capital ratio at 374% at September 30, 2026, and an estimated third-quarter statutory operating gain of $21.9 million. No dividends were paid by insurance subsidiaries to the holding company in the quarter. Holding company unrestricted cash and investments were $230.7 million, compared with $351.4 million at the end of 2025. The debt-to-capital ratio was 36.5%, up from 33.6% at year-end 2025, or 25.7% excluding accumulated other comprehensive income, compared with 26.2%. Those holding company liquidity and leverage figures are the ones to watch, since a holding company funds buybacks, dividends and debt service from subsidiary dividends.

Reinsurance and buybacks

A third reinsurance transaction with CNO's Bermuda affiliate closed on October 1, 2026, covering about $270 million of in-force graded benefit life statutory reserves from Colonial Penn. The release does not describe regulatory approvals or the expected capital effect.

CNO repurchased $60.0 million of its stock in the quarter, covering 1.1 million shares at an average price of $54.52. It has $240.4 million remaining on its repurchase authorisation, and 91.7 million shares were outstanding. Common dividends paid in the quarter were $16.5 million. Weighted average diluted shares for the quarter were 94.3 million.

How to read it

The results show a life insurer with improving earnings power, rising investment income and steady sales, but the headline growth is flattered by a weak comparison quarter and a favourable assumption review. Investors may weigh the lower reported book value, higher leverage and lower holding company cash against the raised guidance and strong capital ratio. The company scheduled its earnings call for October 30 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time, where management could discuss the recurring portion of the earnings and the outlook.

This article summarises one company release, which presents management's chosen metrics and was partly truncated when reviewed. It is not investment advice, and readers should consult CNO's filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission for complete data.

Key Points

  • 1Third-quarter net operating income was $179.1 million, or $1.90 per diluted share, up 41% in dollars and 47% per share; net income was $161.1 million against $23.1 million a year earlier.
  • 2The result includes $44.9 million, or $0.48 per share, of significant items tied to the comprehensive annual actuarial review, so the underlying improvement is smaller than the headline.
  • 3CNO raised its 2026 operating EPS guidance, with the midpoint up 9% from the prior guidance, and operating EPS is up 43% year to date.
  • 4Book value per share was $25.34 against $27.24 a year earlier, but book value per diluted share excluding accumulated other comprehensive income rose 8% to $41.29.
  • 5The estimated statutory RBC ratio was 374%, the company repurchased $60.0 million of stock in the quarter, and a third reinsurance transaction with a Bermuda affiliate closed on October 1 covering about $270 million of reserves.

Why This Matters

CNO sells life, health and annuity products largely to middle-income Americans through exclusive and independent agents, so its results show how a mid-sized life insurer is balancing growth in annuity sales, investment income and capital management. The way the quarter's profit leans on an actuarial review is a reminder to separate recurring earnings from one-time assumption updates.
